Authorities are holding a suspect they say financed IS with cryptocurrency, received instructions on making explosives, and prepared an ideologically motivated trip to Somalia.

A 23-year-old Swedish-Syrian man has been charged with terrori offences, including attempts to travel to Somalia to join an Islamic State (IS) affiliate. He is also accused of funding IS via cryptocurrencies and receiving instructions on manufacturing explosives.

The suspect tried to reach Somalia twice—once in September 2023 and again in March 2024—but was arrested both times. Although he never reached his destination, prosecutors say he intended to take an active role in IS on arrival.

The trial will begin on December 3 at Attunda District Court and last three days. Experts warn that IS activity is growing in Somalia despite its smaller presence compared to Al-Shabaab.
