Under a new law voted through by the Swedish Riksdag, paying for sexual acts online will soon be prohibited. The pending crackdown will make it illegal to provide payment or other compensation for such activities in livestreaming video or on VOIP services.

According to Social Democratic MP Teresa Carvalho, after the Riksdag passed the proposal:

This is a new form of sex purchase and it is high time that we modernize the Sex Purchase Act, and that we also include purchases that take place remotely on digital platforms such as Onlyfans.

From July, purchasing a sexual act could lead to a maximum of one year of imprisonment, while procurement (pimping) offences can lead to a maximum of four years inside. Supporters of the new law say it is a necessary part of modern child protection, while OnlyFans ‘content creators’ say it will hit their earnings and free choice unfairly.

The manufacture and purchase of pre-recorded sexual material will not be affected.
