The Jewish Central Council in Sweden has filed a police report against MP Lorena Delgado Varas of the Left (formerly Communist) Party after she shared an antisemitic post on the social media platform X. The post showed an image of a dark hand with an Israeli flag steering puppet hands with a U.S. flag which, in turn, controlled the movements of soldiers with German, British, French, Canadian, and Ukrainian flags. The text underneath the image said, “The Zionist Jews control the world.”
“Delgado Varas has spread an antisemitic myth that has caused enormous harm to us Jews over the years,” the Jewish Central Council said in a press release. “It is important that the law enforcement authorities now consider whether she can be held accountable for this act.”
The MP told leftist publication ETC that she didn’t see the entire text of the post, only the illustration where Israel secretly controls the U.S..
On Tuesday, the party announced that the MP would be suspended from her political duties pending the police investigation.
Party chairman Nooshi Dadgostar last fall said that “antisemitism has no place in the party” or the country. Her comments came after several representatives of the party expressed antisemitic views and support for terrorist organizations.
MP Delgado Varas has repeatedly ignored directions from Speaker Andreas Norlén for breaking the dress code by wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh in parliament. In a comment to state radio, Delgado Varas commented that while rules are good, “there will always be a gray area. Banning a shawl is such an area.”
Antisemitic statements are generally considered a form of hate speech and are prohibited under Swedish law.
