The Swiss federal government, along with cantonal authorities and labor unions, has issued a formal warning against the popular initiative “No to Ten Million Switzerland.” Officials argue that the proposal threatens the nation’s prosperity, security, and long-standing humanitarian tradition.

Speaking in Bern on Monday, March 16th Justice Minister Beat Jans warned that ending the free movement of persons would not only jeopardize Switzerland’s bilateral agreements with the European Union but also severely exacerbate existing labor shortages.

This high-level opposition comes as the country prepares for a nationwide referendum this June. The initiative, which seeks to cap Switzerland’s population at 10 million until 2050 by strictly limiting migration, reached the required 100,000-signature threshold in record time.
