All 40 people killed in a New Year’s fire at a bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana have now been formally identified. Half of the victims are under the age of 18. Their ages ranged from just 14 to 39.
The tragedy has left the resort in deep mourning. More than a thousand people walked in silence through Crans-Montana to remember those who died in the blaze at the Le Constellation bar, which was packed with young partygoers when the fire broke out shortly.
The victims included Swiss, French, Italian, and other European nationals. Many were apprentices, high school pupils, and university students, according to church leaders during a memorial mass held near the destroyed venue.
Investigators believe the fire spread rapidly after sparklers attached to champagne bottles ignited soundproofing foam on the ceiling, producing intense heat and smoke. Video footage shows people desperately trying to escape, some breaking windows to get out.
The bar’s French owners are under criminal investigation on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence and other offences. Switzerland will hold a national day of mourning on January 9, while Pope Leo XIV has expressed his condolences and prayers for the victims and their families.
