Police in Siegen-Geisweid, North Rhine-Westphalia, were called on Saturday, October 18th after residents witnessed a brutal assault on a woman in the street.
Witnesses heard cries for help and saw a man chasing and beating his wife before officers intervened. The suspect, a 57-year-old Syrian national, reportedly attacked his 52-year-old Lebanese wife around 3:45 p.m.
Both have permanent residence in Germany. Police detained the man at the scene and for safety reasons searched his vehicle. Communication proved difficult, as he spoke only Arabic, forcing officers to use a translation app.
During questioning, the man reportedly alleged that his wife had stolen money from him, a belief which likely triggered the violent outburst. The woman stated she had been struck multiple times, though paramedics initially found no visible injuries. She was later taken to hospital for further examination.
According to NIUS, the man is already known to police for previous offences, including grievous bodily harm and theft. Police confirmed that the man has three wives and ten children living in Germany.
A criminal complaint for assault has been filed, and the case is under further investigation.
The incident comes just weeks after two Syrian teenagers were arrested in Dresden for robbing and sexually assaulting a man near the city’s main train station.
