Germany’s national conservative party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), announced plans to invite representatives of the U.S. government and the Republican Party to a congress in Berlin next February.
The announcement was made by AfD deputy parliamentary group leader Markus Frohnmaier during his visit to the United States.
Frohnmaier attended the gala of the New York Young Republican Club, where he received the Allen W. Dulles Award for “the courageous work that the AfD does in the particularly repressive and hostile political environment of Germany.” The award was presented by Dovid Hotzman, a club leader, who invoked the slogan “Germany first” and addressed Chancellor Friedrich Merz with the phrase:
Chancellor Merz: Tear down this firewall!
A total of 20 AfD parliamentarians participated in the U.S. visit, including Bundestag members Gerold Otte, Jan Nolte, and Hannes Gnauck, as well as representatives from the European Parliament and Saxony-Anhalt state parliament.
On Sunday, Frohnmaier emphasized that he was proud to have received the award, which
pays tribute to the struggle against oppression and for freedom of expression in a country where millions of voters are ignored and criminalized. Our American friends clearly recognize what is happening in this country—an instrumentalization of state power against unpopular politicians.
AfD deputy leader Beatrix von Storch noted that the party’s positions on migration, free speech, and governance closely align with those of the current U.S. Republican Party, offering opportunities for transatlantic cooperation.
