A 73-year-old terminally ill Israeli woman has been charged with plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu using a rocket-propelled grenade, prosecutors announced Thursday, July 24th. The woman is an anti-government activist from Tel Aviv. She allegedly planned the attack as a final act of defiance, believing she was “sacrificing” herself to “save the State of Israel.”
“The State Prosecutor’s Office has filed an indictment against a Tel Aviv resident for attempted conspiracy to commit a terrorist act” the Justice Ministry said in a statement. The woman, upon learning of her incurable illness, allegedly sought to obtain a rocket launcher and assassinate the prime minister.
She reportedly shared her plan with another political activist, asking him to help her procure the weapon and gather intelligence on Netanyahu’s schedule, movements, and security arrangements. While the man initially tried to dissuade her, he ultimately contacted a lawyer who then alerted the security services. The woman was subsequently arrested.
The prosecution argues that despite her medical condition, the suspect remains dangerous. “She wanted to sacrifice herself to save the State of Israel,” the statement said, noting that she had expressed willingness to die as a “martyr.”
