The Irish Data Protection Commission said on Friday, May 2nd, that it imposed a fine of €530 million on TikTok, the China-based social media company.

According to the Commission, TikTok infringed the GDPR regarding its transfers of EEA User Data to China and its transparency requirements. The decision includes administrative fines totalling €530 million and an order requiring TikTok to bring its processing into compliance within 6 months. The decision also includes an order suspending TikTok’s transfers to China if processing is not brought into compliance within this timeframe.

TikTok said it plans to appeal the fine. The company insisted it had “never received a request” from Chinese authorities for European users’ data.

“(TikTok) has never provided European user data to them,” Christine Grahn of TikTok Europe was quoted as saying. “We disagree with this decision and intend to appeal it in full.”
