Hollywood star Tom Cruise has reportedly abandoned his lavish £35 million (€40 million) London apartment after growing concerned that the capital has “declined” and no longer offers the security he requires.

The move follows a recent violent robbery at a Bucherer jeweler’s situated directly beneath his residence. The raid was carried out by six armed assailants who escaped with thousands of pounds worth of Rolex watches. This reportedly left the Hollywood heavyweight feeling vulnerable in the upmarket area. Following the incident—and the completion of the filming at Pinewood Studios of the Oscar-tipped black comedy Digger—the 63-year-old has now vacated his property and returned to the U.S.

According to Cruise’s representatives:

He often loved to take a walk around the area but it seems like Knightsbridge is becoming less safe by the week. He just felt the area has declined in the past year or two.

The announcement parallels that of former England international footballer Jonjo Shelvey had quit London for Dubai in pursuit of a safer family environment.
