A key Russian general was shot in an apartment building in Moscow on the morning of Friday, February 6th and rushed to hospital, officials said, in what appears to be the latest targeted attack against a high-ranking military figure.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said “an unidentified individual fired several shots” at Vladimir Alekseyev, a general holding a senior post within Russia’s general staff, before fleeing the scene.
The agency confirmed that Alekseyev was hospitalized but did not disclose details about his condition.
“The victim has been hospitalised,” the committee said in a statement, adding that investigative and operational search measures were under way to identify those responsible for the shooting.
Alekseyev is a career military officer and currently serves as first deputy chief of Russia’s general staff, according to his official biography. He previously led intelligence operations during Russia’s military intervention in Syria in support of former president Bashar al-Assad.
In 2023, Alekseyev was also dispatched to negotiate with Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin during the mercenary chief’s brief mutiny against Russia’s military leadership.
The shooting is part of a series of attacks on senior Russian military figures since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
