As Canadians head to the polls on Monday, April 28, for the country’s historic general election, U.S. President Donald Trump continues to promote his narrative of making its northern neighbor the “cherished 51st State.”
President Trump shared on social media, “No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Look how beautiful this land mass would be.” He continued, using all caps: “Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES WITH NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE!”
Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre responded on X, “President Trump, stay out of our election,” adding, “Canada will always be proud, sovereign and independent and we will NEVER be the 51st state.”
When former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned, the Conservatives held a 20-point lead over the Liberals, now led by interim Prime Minister Mark Carney, a banker with no political experience. However, the Liberal Party has quickly gained ground over the past month, and recent polls show little difference between the two candidates. It remains unclear how, if at all, Trump’s statements have affected the popularity of either contender.
