U.S. President Donald Trump has called on several countries to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz in order to help secure the vital shipping route amid escalating tensions with Iran.
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he hoped the United Kingdom, France, China, Japan, and South Korea would send naval vessels to the region to help keep the waterway open and safe. The strait is one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes, with around 20% of global oil supplies passing through it.
The appeal comes after a number of attacks on ships in and around the strait since the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran began on February 28th.
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre, at least sixteen vessels have been reported attacked in the area since the conflict started.
Meanwhile, Trump confirmed on Friday that American forces carried out a major strike on military targets on Kharg Island, the key hub for Iran’s crude oil exports. He described the operation as one of the most powerful bombing raids in the region’s recent history and said the strikes successfully destroyed Iranian military installations on the island.
