Speculation over a visit by the U.S. president to Hungary has intensified as CPAC Hungary prepares for its fifth edition in Budapest.

Hungary is set to host the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) for the fifth time on March 21, with strong indications that U.S. President Donald Trump may attend in person ahead of the country’s April parliamentary election.

Organisers confirmed on Tuesday, January 13th that CPAC Hungary 2026 will take place in Budapest, with a promotional video featuring Prime Minister Viktor Orbán alongside Trump and Alice Weidel, co-leader of Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).

A video announcing the event posted to social media featured, among others, the U.S. president, which has fuelled speculation that he will travel to Hungary for the event.

These expectations were reinforced last week when Orbán published a letter from Trump confirming his intention to visit the country at the prime minister’s invitation.

In the letter, Trump described the state of bilateral ties as a “golden era” and praised Orbán’s leadership, writing that it “serves as an example to others around the world.”

“You have consistently stood for the principles that make Hungary strong—faith, family, and national sovereignty—and America respects that courage,” Trump added. He also wished Orbán “the best luck in the upcoming election campaign” and said his team would coordinate the timing of the visit.

Orbán welcomed the message publicly, saying U.S.–Hungarian relations were “stronger than ever” and expressing his expectation of hosting the U.S. president in Budapest.

Trump previously addressed CPAC Hungary via video link in 2025; a personal appearance this year would come just weeks before the national vote.
