U.S. military action against alleged Latin American narcoterrorism escalates, piling the pressure on President Nicolás Maduro.

President Donald Trump has said he will commence targeted drug operations on land in Latin America, as part of an expanded military campaign against drug trafficking.

Speaking on Friday, December 12, Trump claimed the U.S. had already stopped most drugs entering the country by sea and said land-based action would now follow. He did not say when or where the strikes would begin, or whether targeted countries could still take action to prevent them.

The president said the new phase would not necessarily be limited to Venezuela, although the campaign is widely seen as part of U.S. pressure on President Nicolás Maduro. Recent U.S. actions include attacks on suspected drug-smuggling boats and the seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker.
