On Wednesday, September 17th, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to designate Antifa—a term for loosely organized far-left groups—as a “major terrorist organization,” a move he has vowed since his first term.
“I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, calling Antifa “A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER.”
Trump had previously referred to the designation after senior White House official Stephen Miller pledged to dismantle the “vast domestic terror movement” linked to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Trump has held Antifa responsible since his first term for incidents including violence against police and the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6th, 2021.
