Donald Trump said on Tuesday, November 26th, he is sending his envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow next week to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of efforts to finalize a deal to end the war in Ukraine.
The U.S. president claimed there were only “a few remaining points of disagreement” and suggested he may meet Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky once the agreement is close to completion.
The revised American peace plan—initially criticized for favoring Moscow—now includes more Ukrainian priorities, according to officials familiar with the text. Trump also said Jared Kushner may join Witkoff on the trip.
In remarks delivered in the European Parliament on Tuesday, November 26th, European Commission President Ursula vonder Leyen stated “Russia’s playbook has not changed. From the start Russia has always believed that they can outlast Ukraine, Europe and all of its allies,” adding “Europe must keep up the pressure on Russia–until there is a just and lasting peace.” Von der Leyen declared
Europe will stand with Ukraine and support Ukraine every step of the way.
French President Emmanuel Macron said there is “clearly no Russian willingness” for a ceasefire, despite U.S. optimism that talks are moving forward.
Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov said there is “common understanding” on the core of the plan but stressed that key details must still be resolved in direct talks.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer cautioned that “a tough road” remains before any agreement is possible.
