U.S. president Donald Trump is set to meet Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado at the White House on Thursday.
Machado’s White House visit comes a day after Trump used positive terms to describe his first known call with Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez, confirming his satisfaction with the allies of Nicolás Maduro remaining in power, for now at least. Rodríguez described the call as “productive and courteous” and noted that discussions were characterized by “mutual respect.”
“Many topics were discussed,” Trump said, “including Oil, Minerals, Trade and, of course, National Security.”
Machado has campaigned for years to end Maduro’s rule and will use the White House visit to advocate for renewed U.S. attention on Venezuela’s political challenges.
