President Donald Trump has threatened to cut U.S. financial support to Argentina if President Javier Milei loses upcoming legislative elections. Speaking from the White House, Trump said American taxpayers would not fund a government led by “far-left” forces and praised Milei’s free-market reforms.
The warning follows a $20 billion (€17.2 billion) aid package which the administration insists is not a bailout but support for Argentina’s neighbours.
Milei, who came to power promising to cut spending and reform the economy, faces growing domestic challenges as inflation and unemployment rise.
Former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner criticized the move saying Argentina’s fate should not depend on the U.S.
