The Kremlin on Tuesday accused U.S. President Donald Trump of undermining peace efforts in Ukraine, warning that his stance could embolden Kyiv and further stall negotiations.
The comments came a day after Trump issued a 50-day ultimatum for Russia to strike a peace deal with Ukraine. The Republican president urged both sides to begin talks aimed at ending the conflict, now in its fourth year. He warned that if no agreement is reached within that timeframe, he would impose severe tariffs on Russia’s remaining trade partners to hinder Moscow’s ability to fund its military operations.
Russian officials said they were still assessing Trump’s statement but suggested it would not foster a productive atmosphere for talks.
“It seems that such a decision made in Washington and in NATO countries, or directly in Brussels will be perceived by Kyiv not as a signal for peace but for the continuation of the war,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
