Sunday, February 1st saw a former leading liberal and the ex-President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) launch a new cross-party initiative called “Turning Point for Germany.”
Under Gerhard Papke and Hans-Georg Maaßen, the civic alliance emphasized that its aim is not to create yet another party, but to establish a liberal-conservative middle-class initiative and an open forum to discuss what must be done to halt Germany’s decline. The duo stressed that they do not want to exclude the right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) but rather involve it in a critical discourse about the country’s future:
The firewall against the AfD serves only to maintain the power of the political left, against the will and interests of the majority of Germans. This cannot continue!
The initiators also argue that misguided energy policies, uncontrolled migration and an erosion of core democratic freedoms have placed Germany under unprecedented strain, demanding an open debate without ideological restrictions.
