Two people were killed and five others wounded when unknown assailants opened fire in Nice, southern France, authorities said on Saturday.
Investigators suspect that Friday night’s attack was a premeditated killing carried out by an organized criminal group. According to Mayor Christian Estrosi, the perpetrators used automatic weapons and are believed to be linked to drug trafficking.
The mayor also called for a permanent increase in police presence in the affected part of the city. The attackers remain at large.
According to the local prefecture, violent crime is not uncommon in the area, and additional police reinforcements have been deployed to ensure public safety.
Eric Ciotti, President of the Union of Rights for the Republic and a deputy representing the region of Nice, commented on X, “We do not want Nice to resemble Marseille.”
