Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Thursday, October 23rd, urged the U.S. to avoid a “crazy war.” His remarks came after President Donald Trump said he had approved covert operations against Venezuela as part of an anti-drug campaign in the region—a charge Maduro denies.
U.S. strikes launched in early September have killed at least 37 people. Trinidad and Tobago announced that a U.S. warship will dock there for joint exercises later this month.
“Yes peace, yes peace forever, peace forever. No crazy war, please!” Maduro said in English in a meeting with unions aligned with the leftist leader.
Venezuela’s defense minister condemned what he called CIA-linked covert activities, while legal experts questioned the legitimacy of U.S. actions in international waters.
