Unauthorised entry into the president's Florida residence—while carrying a shotgun and a can of gasoline—prompted swift action from federal law enforcement agents.

A man was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents after he crossed the security perimeter of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida while the president was in Washington.

According to a statement from the Secret Service, the incident occurred early Sunday, February 22nd at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time. Agents noticed the man in his early twenties attempting to enter the security perimeter at the north gate of Mar-a-Lago while carrying a shotgun and a gasoline canister. The man was shot and killed at the scene, with no one else injured. Trump was not on the property at the time.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said agents first ordered the man to put down his items. However, after putting down the gas canister, the man raised the firearm in a shooting position, prompting agents and a local police officer to open fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

This incident is not unique: Trump has been the target of assassination attempts on several occasions in the past. In July 2024, 20-year-old Matthew Crooks fired several shots at a rally in Pennsylvania, one of which grazed Trump’s right ear—an event that may have ultimately influenced the election outcome.

This month also saw Ryan Routh sentenced to life imprisonment after attempting to assassinate the then-presidential candidate on a Florida golf course in September 2024, two months before the U.S. elections.

Influencer and Trump ally Charlie Kirk was shot dead on a university campus in Utah in September 2025, sparking a wave of grief among conservatives.

The name of the deceased in Sunday’s incident has not been released, and authorities are attempting to contact his relatives.
