Brits could see everyday prices rise by £1.6 billion due to Ed Miliband’s new Net Zero tax, the British Retail Consortium warns.
The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme—starting this week—makes food and drink companies pay for packaging disposal, costing around £2 billion, of which retailers say 80% will land on consumers.
“This is a multibillion-pound levy during a cost-of-living crisis,” said Andrew Opie of the BRC. Sean Murphy from glass firm Encirc added: “This tax will hit everyone—from supermarkets to pubs and factories.”
In response, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch pledged to scrap Britain’s “failed” Climate Change Act 2008, which sets legally binding targets to make the UK a net-zero carbon emitter by 2050.
