Belgium has called on international partners as it faces a surge of unidentified drone incursions over airports and military sites. In response, the UK is sending experts and equipment to help track and neutralize the threats, which have temporarily closed airports and heightened security concerns. Drones have been spotted over Belgian airports and military bases in the past week after causing significant disruption across Europe in recent months. However, the British armed forces have not disclosed any details about the deployment, while France had previously announced plans to send an anti-drone team to the country.
It remains unclear who is behind the incidents, while Russia has denied any involvement.
Drones were sighted over Brussels and Liège airports in eastern Belgium on Tuesday, causing several incoming flights to be diverted. Drone incursions had already been detected earlier, on November 1, when three unidentified drones flew over the Kleine Brogel military air base in northeastern Belgium.
On Friday, the German defence minister suggested a link between the recent drone incidents in Belgium and discussions over using frozen Russian assets held by the Belgian financial institution Euroclear to finance a large-scale loan to Ukraine.
