A Somali migrant was sentenced to life with a minimum of 25 years for killing 37-year-old Gurvinder Singh Johal on CCTV in an English bank last May.
Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur—who entered the UK illegally in 2023—attacked Singh Johal with a kitchen knife, before calmly leaving the bank, after spending just 22 seconds inside. Nur, who has a criminal record across Europe, had previously threatened charity workers in Derby, East Midlands.
Addressing Derby Crown Court, Judge Shaun Smith described the murder as “brutal and callous,” while Singh Johal’s family said their lives were “shattered” by the senseless killing.
This is the second concluded murder trial in the same week to secure the conviction of someone who should not have been in Britain in the first place.
