Finnish police reported on Wednesday, April 1st that a “foreign” drone had been spotted on a frozen lake near Finland’s border with Russia.
Media sources suggest the UAV may have been Ukrainian. The incident occurred on Lake Pyhajarvi in Parikkala, eastern Finland, on Tuesday, just two days after two stray drones crashed in southern Finland.
Superintendent Jukka Lankinen said authorities are investigating whether the UAV carried a warhead. While one of Sunday’s crashed drones was confirmed to be Ukrainian, officials have not verified the origin of the latest UAV—or when it entered Finnish airspace. Finnish public broadcaster Yle reported that the drone is Ukrainian and may have been armed.
The drone did not cause any injuries or damage to property. Following the weekend crashes, Finnish prime minister Petteri Orpo emphasized that Finland faces no direct military threat. He also confirmed ongoing communication with Ukraine regarding the incidents.
Ukraine apologised on Monday, explaining that the drones were likely diverted from their course due to Russian interference.
