Russian sources report an armoured military incursion by Ukraine into the Kursk region. For the second time, Ukrainian forces have seized Russian territory—this time, after specialist equipment was used to break through minefields following an overnight border crossing.

Subsequent fighting was reported near the villages of Tetkino and Zvannoe. 

Only last month, Russia’s military leadership claimed to have totally expelled Ukrainian troops from the Kursk region.

In the build-up to Russian Victory Day celebrations, President Volodymyr Zelensky made comments interpreted as a threat to foreign dignitaries attending the Moscow events. It now appears that taking territory from the Russians might have been the surprise he had in mind.
