Ukranian drones were used in multiple attacks on at least 40 Russian aircraft at four military bases on Sunday, June 1st. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the so-called ‘Spider’s Web’ operation deployed 117 drones to strike “34% of [Russia’s] strategic cruise missile carriers.”
Russia called the destruction of its military assets a “terrorist act,” claiming at least 13 Russian aircraft destroyed and others damaged. Drones were smuggled into Russia, hidden in mobile cabins with controllable roofs, and then launched from an external command and control system.
The operation—months in planning—comes on the eve of a scheduled round of peace talks in Istanbul, Turkey, on Monday, June 2nd.
