Nicolás Maduro branded his country’s opposition leader a “demonic witch” after she won a Nobel Peace Prize.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Sunday, October 12th called opposition leader Maria Corina Machado a “demonic witch”—two days after she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote democracy in Venezuela.

Maduro, who has long faced U.S. opposition—including recent naval deployments under U.S. president Donald Trump—accused Machado of advocating foreign intervention, saying most Venezuelans reject her. The government often nicknames her “la sayona,” referencing a vengeful spirit from national folklore.

Machado, who supports U.S. military maneuvers in the region, dedicated her Nobel to the Venezuelan people and praised Trump, claiming his actions have helped bring Venezuela closer to freedom.
