Residents in Vienna’s Favoriten district are growing increasingly alarmed as drug-related crime has escalated to unprecedented levels. Public spaces are being overtaken by drug dealers and users, leaving locals feeling unsafe in their own neighborhoods.

“Drug-related crime is increasing at an alarming rate. The situation is reminiscent of open drug scenes, as seen in other European cities. Dealers and users are taking over public spaces.” warned Christian Schuch (FPÖ), deputy district mayor of Vienna-Favoriten: “Drugs are consumed openly on the streets, and drug trafficking takes place in broad daylight.”

Recent police statistics show the scale of the crisis. In 2024 alone, Favoriten registered 2,028 cases under the Narcotics Act (SMG), making it the district with the highest number of drug-related offenses in Vienna.

Schuch openly criticized the governing parties for their inaction. He accused the SPÖ and ÖVP of standing idly by while the drug problem spreads. He also condemned federal and state politicians for what he described as a catastrophic failure to act.

Calling for decisive action, Schuch demanded a strong police presence around Keplerplatz and Reumannplatz and urged tough measures against offenders. “Anyone who, as a foreigner, chooses to engage in drug crime deserves to be deported without exception.”
