Russia has threatened to take military “countermeasures” if the West increases its military footprint in Greenland, Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Wednesday, February 11th.
Several European countries have deployed small contingents of troops to Greenland in recent weeks, following U.S. president Donald Trump repeatedly said he wanted to acquire the Arctic island.
In a speech to Russian lawmakers, Lavrov said:
In the event of the militarization of Greenland and the development of military capabilities aimed at Russia, we will take adequate counter-measures, including military-technical ones.
Last month, Trump appeared to back off from his push to acquire the island after claiming he had reached a framework deal with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to ensure greater U.S. influence in the region
Previously, Trump warned that if the U.S. did not secure its interests in Greenland, Russia or China might seize the opportunity to do so.
