Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Thursday, August 14, ahead of a key U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin will meet on Friday, August 15th, at an air base in the far-northern U.S. state. With such high stakes, all sides were pushing hard in the hours before Friday’s meeting.
Zelensky, who has refused to surrender territory to Russia, spoke by telephone on Wednesday, August 13, with Trump, as did European leaders who were not invited to the meeting. The participants voiced confidence afterwards that the U.S. leader would seek a ceasefire rather than concessions by Kyiv.
Trump said that he could quickly organise a three-way summit following his meeting with Putin but stressing he would only hold a second summit involving Zelensky if his initial talks with the Russian president proved successful.
