AfD representative Sabine Reinknecht has gone into quarantine after opening a threatening letter containing a white powder, less than three months after she was ousted from democratically elected office by the parties that claim to be the protectors of democracy—including the centrist CDU, the left-wing SPD, and the Greens.
The former deputy mayor of Bad Salzuflen—whose forced removal was condemned by the AfD as “a fatal signal … for our city, for the respect of voters, and for the political culture as a whole”—opened the letter, addressed to the AfD parliamentary group, on Monday evening. Her discovery of a suspicious substance led to what reports have described as a “major fire department operation.”
According to photos obtained by Nius, the sender used the name “Hilde Coppi,” a communist resistance fighter against the Nazis. The letter was dated August 5th, 1943, the day Coppi was executed by the Nazi regime. The letter read:
My sacred ashes as a symbol of resistance against you and all supporters of your ideology. We are more. Never again is now. Ban the AfD now. Go to Moscow.
The text also refers to the “Red Orchestra,” a term coined by the Nazis in reference to communist resistance groups.
Dirk Brandes, who represents the AfD in the Bundestag, described this as an “attempted attack on an AfD politician,” adding: “Is this still even believable?”

Two of Reinknecht’s colleagues were also forced into quarantine. The state security service is investigating the incident.
