Having already stressed the need to “remain extremely vigilant” about Islamist infiltration after reports pointed to Muslim Brotherhood control of (at least) five Brussels municipalities, Belgian politicians are now calling for an official investigation to establish the true scale of the problem.
The liberal Reformist Movement (MR) this week called on the federal government to produce a detailed report on the national influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in order to “protect our democratic values.”
A Europe-wide discussion on Islamist infiltration was started last month following the release of a French government report on the threat posed to “national cohesion” by the Muslim Brotherhood. The Swedish government later announced it was launching an investigation of its own.
Responding to the MR request, Mathias Vanden Borre from the conservative New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) said it was “absolutely necessary to map political Islamism and actively combat it.”
Our democracy must be able to defend itself against any form of extremism.
The MR said it is important to learn the mechanisms behind the Muslim Brotherhood’s influence in Belgium, enabling officials to “identify the vulnerabilities of our system and take appropriate preventive measures.”
It added that schools are one of the “favourite targets of this infiltration strategy,” as is also the case in France.
Belgian news site Bruzz warned, however, that politicians pointing to the threat of this infiltration are being subjected to death threats.
