European countries—including Britain, France and Italy—and EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Hadja Lahbib are among the signatories of a new statement condemning Israel and insisting that “the war in Gaza must end now.”
Israel responded that the focus should instead be focussed on Hamas, which has “stubbornly” refused to accept a “concrete proposal for a ceasefire deal.”
EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas did not sign the statement. But she did say on Tuesday, July 22nd, that the Israel Defence Forces “must stop” killing civilians at aid distribution points in Gaza. Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s minister for foreign affairs, responded that “Hamas is the one shooting civilians and torturing them when they try to collect the aid,” adding:
The international community must not fall into Hamas’s trap!
His ministry also accused Hamas terrorists of “running a campaign to spread lies about Israel.”
Still, Kallas insists that “all options remain on the table if Israel doesn’t deliver on its pledges.”
The top diplomats of Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia were among the more convincing European allies of Israel who did not sign the statement, which Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration bashed as being “disconnected from reality.”
Europe’s mistreatment of Israel was further put on show when two Israelis were questioned by police after attending Belgium’s Tomorrowland music festival. The BBC says these were reported after waving the flag of their army brigade by a group—chaired by a ‘former member’ of Hezbollah—alleging they had committed war crimes in Gaza. This chair dismissed these claims as “nonsense” and said the BBC was “Hasbara”—that is, Israel’s public diplomacy arm.
