Donald Trump has said that he will be running for president of the United States in 2024, having filed a Statement of Candidacy.
The 45th president made the announcement during an hour-long speech at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida:
We’ve always known that this was not the end, it was only the beginning of our fight to rescue the American Dream … In order to make America great and glorious again I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States … America’s comeback starts right now.
Blaming Biden for the country’s precipitous decline, Trump’s speech touched on high energy prices, illegal migration, the strength of the illegal drug trade, and the rise in violent crime.
He also referred to the dangers of the ‘deep state’ and the political complicity of intelligence and law enforcement that led to the search of his home in Mar-a-Lago.
American history records few candidates return to the presidency after leaving office. It now remains to be seen how Trump’s messaging will develop in the lead-up to 2024, and whether his base is as large as it once was.
