For the French Socialist Party, Emmanuel Macron’s decision to recognise a Palestinian state is not enough; they also want the Palestinian flag to be flown from official buildings across France.
Olivier Faure, the first secretary of the party, said this should happen on September 22nd, when Macron will announce formal recognition at the UN General Assembly. Rosh Hashanah—or, the Jewish New Year—also begins on this day. Faure said:
On September 22nd, when France finally recognises the Palestinian State, let’s fly the Palestinian flag over our town halls.
Jean-Frédéric Poisson, who is a former deputy of the French National Assembly, said Faure’s suggestion was proof that “the first destructive enemies of France are on its own territory. Right in the benches of the National Assembly.” He added that
When France wakes up, these vile creatures will tremble!
Teacher and writer Lisa Hirsig also saw it as a sign of the Socialist party’s “moral and ideological collapse.”
A municipal councilor outside Paris also stressed that “only the French flag should fly on the front of our public buildings!”
And in Nice, Mayor Christian Estrosi bashed Faure’s proposal as a “disgrace,” especially “while hostages are still in the hands of Hamas.”

After announcing that he would recognise a Palestinian state, Macron was strongly rebuffed by officials in Israel, who described the move as “a surrender to terrorism,” as well as by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who warned it was “a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th.”
