Two MEPs have called for tighter regulation of tech firms after a Facebook whistleblower, Frances Haugen leaked papers showing it abused users’ data, EUobserver reports.
Haugen showed we must “not let large tech companies regulate themselves,” Danish centre-left MEP Christel Schaldemose, who is rapporteur on the EU’s new digital services law, said. “We need to regulate the whole system,” German Green MEP Alexandra Geese added.
Meanwhile, social media services Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram are back up and running after an outage that lasted almost six hours, Facebook says.
The company blamed an internal technical issue, BBC reports.
Earlier, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg apologised to those affected by the outage.
