It has now been suggested that if France remains steadfast in opposing the MidCat project, one may be built through Italy instead.

France has renewed its opposition to the construction of the MidCat pipeline, which would transport North African energy through Spain to Germany.

The proposed pipeline would reduce Spain’s dependence on French Nuclear energy. This dependence has intensified, given a long-standing commitment on the part of the Spanish political class not to develop nuclear reactors, as well as the country’s recent legislation barring itself from exploring or exploiting its own natural resources. 

It has now been suggested that if France remains steadfast in opposing the MidCat project, one may be built through Italy instead. However, this poses engineering challenges.
