The party says this move is essential because of the number of sites “where extremism and violent Islamism thrive.”

MEP Charlie Weimers has long worked towards limiting what he describes as Europe’s (especially Iranian) Islamist threat. Now he is going further, demanding that lawmakers across the continent clamp down on the construction of new mosques.

The Sweden Democrats (SD) MEP has submitted a “mosque ban” motion to the European Parliament after last month saying that “the expansion of mosques and other radicalisation centres must be actively countered at national, local and EU level.”

Weimers has pointed to examples of mosque officials in Sweden preaching about “how men should beat their wives” and mosques in Brussels functioning as “recruitment centre[s] for Islamic State fighters.” He also last month wrote to the European Commission, highlighting that “several European countries have closed mosques and Islamic centres after it came to light that they were being used as instruments of radicalisation, recruitment and terrorist financing.”

In Sweden, deputy PM Ebba Busch, the leader of the Christian Democrats, also said last October that she is pushing for a total public ban on burqas and niqabs, years after SD argued for the same.

His latest drive has seen Weimers gain the signatures of 37 politicians from 17 EU member states, including Denmark, Estonia, and Germany.

Marion Maréchal, president of the French Identité Libertés, is backing Weimers’ motion, after previously telling europeanconservative.com that the “Islamisation of our societies”—demonstrated, she said, by the increasing wearing of the veil and the “booming” of the halal business—is “largely driven by the groundwork laid by Islamist organisations,” which presumably includes mosques.

And one Italian signatory, Lega Nord MEP Paolo Borchia, last year criticised reports of a Catholic kindergarten in Treviso sending its children on a visit to a mosque, saying this was an example of “European identity” being “silently dismantled.”

The motion is perhaps unlikely to receive the backing of many more at this time. Even a far more limited attempt last year to stop Brussels funding organisations linked to the Muslim Brotherhood appeared not to garner enough interest from EU officials.

Yet Weimers on Tuesday expressed his hope that “the right-wing majority” will “stick together during the upcoming committee proceedings. Then a mosque ban could become a reality.”

  1. Islam is not a religion. Islam is a barbaric prehistoric cult of death and destruction. It’s an inferior pagan culture run by inhumane man having their way with woman. They don’t assimilate or advance Civilization wherever they go. They live by Sharia Law, against basic human rights. Islam is a Geo Political movement obsessed with jihad against Western Civilization. Islam should be outlawed in Civilized society. Mosks should be banned.
