All three members of the United Nations’ anti-Israel inquiry have resigned, citing personal—or, in one case, no—reasons.
The commission’s most recent report was released in May and made what Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration described as “abhorrent and immoral accusations” against Israel, including that it was carrying out acts of “extermination” in Gaza.
Monitoring group UN Watch has celebrated the resignations, expressing hope that “the dominoes are falling.” Hillel Neuer, the group’s executive director, said the emptying of these positions was “long overdue.”
This was a commission born in prejudice—mandated to investigate only Israel, while ignoring Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Palestinian Authority. Its members were selected precisely for their hostility to the Jewish state.

The agency is, however, not at all likely to change tack with regard to Israel, especially given the continued presence of its ‘Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories,’ Francesca Albanese.
Albanese was last week sanctioned by the U.S., which condemned her “biased and malicious activities.” Indeed, critics say this is why the members of the Israel inquiry have since stepped down from their posts.
But European officials, who are often keen to position themselves on the wrong side of the argument, have stood up for the UN bigwig, including a group of Italian cultural figures who are urging their government to come to her defence.
New Israel Commission members are supposed to be proposed by August 31st. UN Watch does not appear hopeful that the new appointees will bring a fresh approach, saying the triple resignation “is not reform, it’s damage control.”
