U.S. President Donald Trump on February 5th, 2026 took to Truth Social to endorse Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of Hungary’s April 12th elections.
Trump said Orbán is a “truly strong and powerful leader, with a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results” and highlighting his efforts to protect Hungary, grow the economy, and maintain law and order. The American president reiterated his complete endorsement of Orbán’s re-election, calling him a “true friend, fighter and WINNER.”
Trump already made it clear that he would like to see Orbán win the 2026 elections at the Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt last year.
Orbán, who thanked Trump on X, reflected on the U.S. president’s endorsement in a radio interview this morning. The Hungarian PM emphasized the importance of building alliances, stating “Our philosophy is that we must gather friends.” Orbán highlighted his longstanding relationship with Trump and suggested that had Trump been in office over the past four years, the Russian–Ukrainian war might not have broken out. He warned that Europe is drifting closer to conflict, while Hungary aims to stay out of the fighting.
Speaking about domestic issues, Orbán stressed that Hungary’s economy, even with modest growth, has the resources to support families and welfare programs. He noted that a 0.3% growth rate last year, combined with planned 5% budget deficits, still allows Hungary to deliver substantial economic performance.
Measures include exempting mothers with two or three children from personal income tax and offering 3% loans for first homes. Orbán said the government intends to restructure the economy into a family-based model in the next four years.
The Prime Minister also defended Hungary’s pension system, including the 13th and 14th monthly payments, against opposition from Brussels, stating that Hungarian money should benefit families rather than be redirected abroad. On energy policy, he emphasized the need to maintain utility cost reductions, even in the face of U.S. and EU sanctions on Russian energy.
