Ending the war in Ukraine is “easy,” according to Donald Trump, who has vowed to stop the fighting “within 24 hours.” The 2024 presidential hopeful spoke in his usual brazen tone on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which he has long insisted would not have taken place were he still in the office, in an exclusive interview with Britain’s GB News.
Mr. Trump said the consequences of the ongoing war, including that “the world is in the most dangerous place it’s ever been in because of the power of weapons, and that includes nuclear,” form part of his desire to be reelected next year. The conflict is also important because its impact on human life is “far greater than anyone thinks.” He added that Joe Biden, who late last month formally announced his candidacy, is not up for the job because he “doesn’t have a clue.”
After reasserting that “[Vladimir] Putin never would have gone into Ukraine if it weren’t for the incompetence of … this current administration,” in part because “it was never mentioned [during the Trump administration], and I knew him very well,” the Republican insisted that with the keys to power, he could end the war with no difficulties.
If I were president … I will end that war in one day, it will take 24 hours. I know [Volodymyr] Zelensky well, I know Putin well … That deal will be easy.
Nigel Farage, interviewer and former leader of UKIP, failed to push Mr. Trump on how he would go about ending the war. A selection of world leaders are working to bring about peace negotiations, but Moscow and Kyiv hold differing views on the terms. The only detail involved in the discussion over the end of the conflict was Mr. Trump’s claim that when it comes to peace, “a lot of it has to do with the money. A lot of it has to do with the military that we’re giving.” Mr. Farage commented that “I think we’d all love to see that war stop and the threats end,” and the conversation simply moved on.
