The European Union is taking the wrong approach to the war in Ukraine and should do more to work towards peace.

That is according to members of the European Parliament—although, as AFP reports, they were too “absent-minded” to know what motion was being passed.

So when an amendment was raised in the Strasbourg parliament, demanding an “urgent shift” in the EU policy, leading officials from the EPP and S&D groups gave it the thumbs up. The motion asked MEPs to, among other things, express regret over

the EU’s militaristic strategy in Ukraine, which has failed to secure peace and undermined the EU’s global relevance

as well as to call on Brussels to

finally open negotiation channels to achieve a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine …

Brussels-based foreign policy expert Eldar Mamedov joked that officials will “probably need to form a special committee to investigate this outbreak of common sense.”

Figures from the EPP and S&D have said they made a mistake and wanted to correct their votes.

But Italy’s Five Stars movement, among others, was clearly delighted with the vote, describing it as a victory against the “warmongering” Brussels establishment.

It also said on Wednesday that Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the Union address—which appears to have pleased almost no one—“was a mockery for all those citizens who demand peace, well-being, and development.”

If we are living in dark and uncertain times today, it is precisely because of her inability to envision compromises and solutions to end the war in Ukraine. On the contrary, her rearmament plan is an indelible stain on European history because it leads our continent directly into war.
