Germany: Parents Warned Against Bringing Children to Pools After Migrant Brawl

In the wake of an unsettling incident last week which saw two large groups of migrant men do battle with one another at a public swimming pool in Berlin, the head of one of Germany’s largest swimming associations has warned parents against bringing their children to public pools this summer, citing safety concerns.

According to police, it was impossible to estimate how many people were injured in the rampage, but there was at least one fatality. A 51-year-old teacher who was traveling with her school class died at the scene.

Germany: Asylum Applications Up 56%; Highest Point Since 2017

The data, released by Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, revealed that some 190,800 migrants submitted applications for asylum last year, up 56.4% from 2020. The figures are the highest recorded since 2017.

Franziska Giffey was elected with 84 votes in favor (out of 139) in the House of Representatives, making her the first woman appointed to the highest office of Berlin politics.
