With Ukraine’s counter-offensive having stalled, Kyiv seems to have pivoted to long-distance pinprick attacks, by which it hopes to impede Russia’s efforts in supplying its troops fighting in Southern Ukraine.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said the attacks amounted to “war crimes,” and would “further affect Ukraine’s capacity to transfer their food products towards those in need in the world.”
Russian authorities claimed to have downed the drones with “electronic warfare systems.”
One Russian lawmaker described the strikes as the worst attack on Moscow since World War II.
The strikes came on the heels of a slickly produced video, meant to rally Ukraine and its allies, which strongly hinted at an imminent Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Washington insisted in December it had not “enabled” Ukraine to carry out the strikes in Russia.
According to Iranian officials, the drones targeted an ammunition manufacturing plant.
