The European People’s Party will hold its congress in the area devastated by the October 2024 environmental catastrophe that left 228 dead and for the mishandling of which no one has been held accountable.
The conservatives want “to create the false impression that the rule of law in Romania is in danger,” an EPP vice chair said after his country banned the nationalist frontrunner from the presidential race.
The EPP majority has approved a March debate on controversial bills in Spain that would severely restrict the independence of the judiciary and popular legal action.
The plan to preserve the firewall involves “driving a wedge” between EPP and conservatives and making sure the center-right knows “there will be consequences to looking both ways.”
