The liberal Left in Germany, through its plan to lower the voting age to 16 at the federal level, appears to be seeking to expand its voter base, just as they have sought to do via pro-mass migration policies.
The president of Germany primarily has a representative function, but the gravitas of the office lends importance to his statements. With 4 out of the 6 parties in Parliament endorsing Frank-Walter Steinmeier for another term, the election might just turn into a show of vanities.
Steinmeier (65), a member of the rightwing camp within the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has had a long, distinguished career. Before becoming president, he served twice as Angela Merkel’s foreign minister. Her predecessor, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, had picked him as his chief of staff.
President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: “We are experiencing a human tragedy for which we share responsibility.”
